Have you ever ever traveled in England? On a visit to London a couple of years ago, I came to understand that the phrase “mind the gap,” was typically used when someone wanted to draw your attention to the gap that was present between the platform and the subway car you were about to enter.
I like this phrase. It asks us to pay attention to the space between where we are and where we want to go. This gap is pretty powerful. Should we miss our step we could fall into the gap. Nope, we don’t want to do that, there is pain in that scenario. If we decide the gap is too much and we hold back our step, we end up staying in the same place. Possibly, generally staying put is the way in which to go. However, if we resolve to step throughout the hole it should get us to a brand new spot and that may current a complete host of issues to deal with. Finally, the “p” stands for plan. You want to be intentional about your growth. Let me say that again. You want to be intentional about your growth. Developing yourself doesn’t generally happen all on its own, you need to set out to make it so. Planning isn’t rocket science. But creating a plan and then sticking to it (see “a” for accountability) does require focus and persistence.
Here’s a quick outline for using the GAP analogy:
G stands for growth. See the gap between where you are right this moment and where you want to be tomorrow as a growth opportunity. State what that gap is. Write it out on paper or use an online option to capture it.
A stands for accountability. Understand that if you happen to stand still, IE: taking no steps to close this gap, that you will change into stagnate. Engage another person who knows you well enough to challenge you to make some movement. Give them permission to affirm your progress and also to nudge you when needed. Stay accountable to keep moving!
P stands for plan. Making a plan around achieving this goal is a first step in itself. You don’t have to be complicated about the plan. But you do have to communicate the plan. We are much more likely to stay the course if we tell someone else about it. The very likelihood that they’ll ask us about it fuels us to take more steps.
